The Garifuna and Honduras Flag Pins were the first items to be released on The Garifuna Market’s website but they almost didn’t happen! Here is a background story of how they did come about.
The items were created a year before their release. The items needed to be carefully manufactured. After some research, our CEO Siria Alvarez realized that she couldn’t find pins of the Garifuna flag. Being 100% Garifuna and looking for items to help her learn more about and represent her culture was important to her. She wanted to develop products that would be truly representational of the culture. The measurements of the flag pin took some time; if you notice, the flag pins at the Garifuna Market are bigger than the average size of a flag pin you would find generally elsewhere.
What caused the hesitation? For Alvarez, having a product that would truly represent the culture, that was meaningful and recognizable was of extreme importance. There was also the uncertainty of whether or not the pins were going to be well accepted by the public or not. Thankfully, the pins were well received and lead to the expansion of the shop’s inventory of products that have been added since its inception.
